Refresh Your Appearance with Eyelid Surgery

February 3 2024

“The eyes are the windows to your soul.” This proverb can be traced back over multiple millennia, and it remains true to this day. One of the first things that a person notices about you is your eyes. Unfortunately, as you get older, you may find that common signs of aging around your eyes start to unintentionally communicate things to others that you wish they didn’t. The good news is that plastic surgeons have some procedures that can help to rejuvenate and refresh the eyes.

Upper Eyelids

Your upper eyelids are likely to become puffier and weaker with age. This makes them appear “heavier” and hang lower over the eyes, creating a tired appearance that can diminish your field of vision. Your lid may also gradually lose the crease that separates the lid from the rest of the face — having a prominent crease is a sign of youthfulness in non-Asian patients.

Upper blepharoplasty is a surgery that delicately removes some of the excess fat and loose skin that weighs down the upper eyelid. Your surgeon can also tighten the eyelid muscles so that they have more strength to open more completely.

Lower Eyelids

Your lower eyelids are also susceptible to skin laxity, and bone erosion can exaggerate the bulging and the appearance of bags. As fat accumulates beneath the eyes, dark circles also make your face look tired, and fat can droop, giving the eyes an even more sunken look.

Lower blepharoplasty targets the bags by removing excess fat while tightening and smoothing skin. Not only should you look better rested, but it should also rejuvenate your appearance. Dermal filler injections like Juvéderm and Restylane are a non-surgical way to restore volume to your undereye hollows, but the results typically last between six months and a year before a touch-up is warranted.

Although upper and lower blepharoplasty are separate procedures, they are often combined in patients 40 and over for more thorough rejuvenation.
