Why Some Women Seek Breast Revision Surgery

April 13 2022

Breast procedures are some of the most popular elective surgeries in the world. Though most breast implants last safely and successfully in women for 10 to 20 years, some women decide to remove and/or replace their implants sooner. The elite surgeons at Atlanta Plastic & Reconstructive Specialists explain the most frequent reasons that they perform breast revision surgery.

Capsular Contracture

After breast augmentation is performed, scar tissue forms a capsule around the implant. While this tissue is usually soft, a small percentage of women notice that the tissue hardens and squeezes the implant. Not only can capsular contracture distort the appearance and shape of the breast, it also can cause pain for the patient. Breast revision is recommended to patients who experience capsular contracture.

They No Longer Want Implants

Although the number of women who are satisfied with their breast augmentation surgery is well above 90%, women may decide down the road that they no longer enjoy having implants. Fortunately, that desire can be easily remedied with breast revision. Our surgeons understand how to remove implants while leaving the natural tissue in an appealing shape and position.

Implant Rippling

Sometimes, implants develop a wrinkly texture which can be seen through the skin. This phenomenon is most common in women who have small breasts and thinner skin. Breast implants can be switched out so the breasts look natural and do not feature ripples on the sides.

To Change Implant Size

Because plastic surgeons take painstaking measures to ensure the implant size is to the patient’s liking, most patients are satisfied with the sizing immediately after a surgery. However, over time, a woman may find herself wishing she had requested larger or smaller breasts than what she initially requested.

Ruptured or Leaking Implant

Breast implants are very durable. However, the longer a woman has them, the odds of implants breaking or leaking gradually increases. With saline implants, a rupture poses no medical risks to the body, though the breasts may start to look deflated and warrant revision from an aesthetic perspective. With silicone implants, it is imperative to remove the ruptured implant to avoid health consequences. Breast revision can replace the broken implant with a new one.
