Plastic Surgery Trends to Watch For

June 12 2015

With over 15.6 million plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States last year alone, it’s clear that the overall trend of using cosmetic surgery to enhance appearance is on the uptick. But which plastic surgery trends do we see ramping up even more in the future? The team at Atlanta Plastic & Reconstructive Specialists shares their thoughts here.

Butt Augmentation

Though butt augmentation surgery has been on the rise since 2012, and with a marked increase of 86 percent in 2014, this trend shows no signs of slowing down. Butt augmentation surgery, which adds volume to the posterior for a curvier shape, can be realized through gluteal (buttock) implants or through fat transfer, a process where fat is removed through liposuction from another part of the body (such as the stomach or inner thighs) and injected into the buttocks. This procedure, often referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift, results in a more natural look and feel to the butt than when implants are used. And since fat from the body is used instead of implants, it is considered a safer procedure.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty, a surgery that trims excess flesh from the labia minora (inner lips of the vagina) and/or labia majora (the vagina’s outer lips), has become increasingly popular in the past few years. In fact, getting a “designer vagina” (as some like to call it) has become a common procedure for 2015, and the trend continues to grow. A labiaplasty procedure will make the vaginal lips smaller or correct an asymmetry between them. Many women want to have this procedure to counter the stretching of the labia as a result of childbirth, genetics or other causes. These women are unhappy with uneven or enlarged vaginal lips that may be causing them discomfort during sex or other physical activities, or feelings of self-consciousness due to their appearance.

Selfie Makeover

Over the past few years the practice of taking “selfies” (photos of yourself, most often with a smartphone and typically for the purpose of sharing it on social media) has been fueling more plastic surgery requests. Patients, often people 30 and younger, use tools including photo-editing apps on their phone to refine or alter their appearance before sharing the photo with their friends on social media. This trend has caused people to be restless with their real-life appearance, as they seek to close the gap between what they see in the mirror and what they post on Instagram. The result? Reshaping the nose with rhinoplasty, having chin augmentation for a more well-defined jawline and getting BOTOX injections for a smoother forehead.
