Male Cosmetic Surgery Gains Popularity

May 15 2013

The face of plastic surgery is changing. Plastic surgeon’s offices, which were once filled with women looking for beauty enhancement or age defying treatments, are now seeing more men looking for body procedures as well. As plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments gain more mainstream acceptance, more men are looking to plastic surgeons to help them improve upon their faces and bodies as well.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) releases an annual review of all cosmetic procedures and their popularity.  2012 saw men accounting for 13% of all plastic surgery procedures, and 9% of non-invasive treatments.  That is an increase of more than 106% over the course of 15 years.  Each year, more men embrace the idea that was once considered for women only, but the big question is:  why?

There are many factors that could contribute to the rise in male cosmetic treatments or plastic surgery for men.  Many men are living longer lives and men need to stay competitive in the workforce longer.  Many men feel that looking younger gives them an edge and helps them stay relevant against younger job competitors.  In fact, according to a University of Texas study, “good looking” people are hired before less attractive people and can earn 3 to 4% more.  This study confirms what many men already feel.  To be competitive, they need to look their best.

Online communication is another big factor in men looking toward male cosmetic surgery.  Face to face communication doesn’t necessarily mean being the same room any more.  Video conferencing puts one’s face on prominent display; causing people to see their flaws quickly.  As more communication leads toward this visual medium, more men want to do what they can to look great on camera.

For some men, it is as simple as wanting to have their appearance match their inner vigor.  As more people focus on health and fitness, they live more active lives in their so-called twilight years. It is only natural to want to look as good as you feel.

Whatever the reasons, the fact remains that more men are seeking plastic surgery than ever before and there appears to be no sign of this changing.
