Are You a Good Candidate for Butt Augmentation (BBL)?

October 6 2023

Have genetics let you down when it comes to your derriere? Large, voluminous butts are considered very attractive these days, but not everyone has full cheeks naturally. Hence, Brazilian butt lift (BBL) has become one of the most popular body contouring surgeries. This fat grafting procedure takes the patient’s own fat cells and reinserts them in the butt for an appealing, youthful shape. To help you determine if you are a good candidate for BBL, the board-certified plastic surgeons at Atlanta Plastic & Reconstructive Specialists invite you to answer the following questions:

Would You Like a Bigger, Rounder Butt?

This question may seem obvious, but it’s a necessary place to start. If you have a flatter backside and do not fill out your pants or bathing suit as well as you would like, BBL can help to improve your appearance and confidence. While some patients choose an exaggerated look, you can also choose a butt size that is more proportional to your figure.

Do You Have Excess Fat on Your Body?

To transfer fat to your buttocks, you must have a surplus of fat in another area. Fat cells are liposuctioned out of areas like the thighs or abdomen so that they can be repositioned in the upper quadrants of the butt. If you have a very small frame without much fat to spare, you may need to consider a more traditional approach to butt augmentation: silicone implants.

Are You in Good Health?

Brazilian butt lift is a very safe surgery, but a surgery nonetheless. To undergo an elective procedure, you should be in good health. Our plastic surgeons review each patient’s medical history to determine candidacy on an individual basis.

Part of being in good health is being a non-smoker. This is important because smoking can prolong your recovery and increase your chances of experiencing complications during and after surgery. If you are a smoker who intends to have BBL one day, quit smoking or vaping as soon as possible.

Are You Willing to Modify Your Habits During Your Recovery?

For at least a couple weeks after BBL, you must avoid putting pressure on your butt to avoid ruining your new, rounder contours and prolonging the healing process. This can be at least a little challenging since most plastic surgery patients like to rest and relax during their recovery. In bed or on the couch, you should lie down on your stomach rather than your back or side. To sit down, you can use a special BBL pillow that puts your weight on your thighs rather than your butt.
