4 Common Myths about Aging

April 10 2017

Thanks to the influx of web blogs and video tutorials available today, not to mention all those beauty magazines, there is more beauty and anti-aging advice at our fingertips than ever before. Unfortunately, some of what we read and hear is inaccurate and can actually do your skin more harm than good. Here, the team at Atlanta Plastic and Reconstructive Specialists debunks four common myths about aging.

1. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Don’t rely on your mom’s looks to tell you how well or bad you will age. While your genes do play a role in aging, everyday habits and lifestyle factors play an even bigger role. Stress, sun damage, smoking, and even diet can all contribute to aging skin.

2. Sunscreen only protects against sunburns.

Countless hours under the sun can cause damage beyond sunburns. According to research, approximately 90 percent of all visible age markers (e.g., wrinkles, age spots, fine lines) are a result of sun damage. The best way to protect your skin when you are outdoors is by applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. For added protection, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (wrap-around styles are best). Sun protection is important even on cloudy days, when 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can still reach your skin.

3. Wrinkles are inevitable.

While wrinkles and fine lines are a part of the natural aging process, there are ways to minimize their appearance. Good skin care habits like not smoking and using the right moisturizer can help prolong your youthful looks. The right anti-aging skin care products can also significantly slow down the aging process. (On the other hand, unprotected sun exposure, smoking, lack of sleep and other lifestyle factors can add years to your appearance.) Additionally, there are several surgical and non-surgical treatments available to help minimize the appearance of wrinkles and other facial signs of aging.

4. You have to spend a lot to look youthful.

Contrary to what some may think, you don’t have to break the bank to look beautiful. Even the slightest changes to your skin care regimen, such as drinking more water, applying sunscreen each day or exfoliating, can do wonders to your skin. When choosing skin care products, we recommend looking at the ingredients instead of the price tag. Drugstore bargain products may very well be more effective (and safer) for your skin than an uber-expensive product.
